We’re not here to rain on your parade and we don’t believe in the scare factor, we’re here to keep you safe through the holiday season. All it takes is a little prep and vigilance on your part and it won’t cost you a penny.
Let's talk Phishing. We know you’ve heard it all before. Don’t click on the link right? We're confident that this has been drummed into pretty much everyone by now. But … phishing attacks are becoming way more sophisticated.
Times have changed
Not so long ago the advice for avoiding dodgy links was, check the URL, is the name of the company spelt wrong? Is there a rogue letter or something that doesn’t look right? Check for the padlock top left of the URL. Look for dodgy logos and badly written emails.
This advice is no longer relevant. Threat actors have learned how to clone websites perfectly. No mistakes. They can buy the certificate for the pretty little padlock and steal the exact logo and font of the website they are cloning.
But hey, it isn’t all doom and gloom. We’ve got you.
What you need to do …
Our advice is pretty straight forward,
Always be suspicious, if it looks too good to be true it probably is.
Just because that super saver ultra-discount email says it’s from your favourite retailer, it doesn’t mean it is (see above). You’re safer visiting their website directly.
If you do click on a link (because let’s face it, it’s pretty hard to differentiate between the real and the fake) be very careful if it asks you to log in. You don’t want to be giving away these details to just anybody. Especially if you use the same password for all of your online shopping. Again, visit the website directly. If the deals are real, they’ll still be there.
On that note, more often than not discount offers are sent with codes. Take the code from the email and enter it manually on the official site. If it’s legitimate it will work, if it isn’t you’ve just saved yourself a whole lot of trouble.
Be suspicious, stay vigilant and enjoy the sales!
